Folly

There is a folly in the park
An 18th century tower
Built by Francis Hiorne
It’s like a miniature castle
You quite fairly may remark

How on earth did it come to be?
Just an elaborate builder’s sample?
Maybe truly little more than that
With just three sides instead of four
To show what a clever legs was he

What ever was in his imagination,
The finished work is pure joy
Becoming a charming folly
Three turrets viewers find rather jolly
Along the decorative crenelations

A chequered pattern of split flint
Then linked with walls of stone
Three, shows its face again
Floors within doors and windows
That in the evening sunlight glint

Circling each cheeky tower
Are six equal fancy facets
Each linked comfortably together
Windows, samples too it seems, does
An ancient duke shelter from a shower

The jolly folly firmly enclosed
By three strong walls of course
Of average human height
This triangular wall not built
To withstand an enemy opposed

Standing grandly in the park
Not far from the Dower House
The premises are alarmed
Taking charm from a tiny castle
Was it only erected for a lark?
