Arundel Triathlon Bike Route: Taster

Well, at least the first view of the day from our kitchen window showed that it was not raining. There were clouds, and those clouds were scurrying quickly across the sky that also indicated that it was windy. Strangely for the last day of April, that wind was coming directly from the east, the trees just beyond our little garden were added proof of serious activity there. The garden thermometer just outside the back door though, was slightly up from the last two mornings at 10C. Put together and it came to mean that we would go out on our bikes.

That was what we had mentioned in our prayers at bedtime… ‘No rain please’.
We both know that we are pretty far down on the ‘To Do Jobs’ for the big man in the sky, at least for lesser mortals like us that just want to have fun for a couple of hours.

Our plan had been to set the alarm for the usual weekday training time so that if it was a dry day, then we could get out on the bikes before the weekend traffic built up to the impossible to ride out safely level. We wanted to test ride the Arundel standard distance triathlon bike course. The start of that course is about two and a half miles from our home but sticking strictly to the plan, we chucked the bikes in Petra the Peugeot (our van) along with the ‘Stuff’ stacker box that neatly holds; bike helmets, bike shoes, glasses, gloves for Steve and neoprene and velcro wrist supports for me. We left home just after 6.30am and parked outside the Castle lower gate entrance, which is close enough to the start of the Arundel Tri bike course.

For anybody who is still thinking about entering this event; do it and quickly. It is a super event with spectacular scenery. The bike route is hard enough and it would be a lie to say it was anything other than a challenging course but if we are to be sensible; I am seventy seven and three quarters years old, so if I can get round it anybody can wouldn’t you say. It is pretty much endlessly hilly but not mountainous. It has several long drags like Long Furlong and the next section from Findon to the Washington roundabout, passing Chanctonbury Ring. Then it undulates until Amberley Castle before it turns nasty to climb back over the downs to return via the lovely downhill back into Arundel.

It was windy this morning and after leaving Arundel the first five miles was head on into that east wind.
From turning off the A27 the next six miles had a cross wind.
Miles 11 to 19 had a tail wind but also some lumpy little hills.
Mile 19 to the end of the course was back into the head wind that slowed the best descent a little.

Our fastest mile was 1.58
The slowest was 7.56 but I won’t say where that is, in case it spoils your fun.
Overall time was 1 hour 51mins
Average 12.5.

To anybody who read as far as this; you are a very sad person!

I have not ridden that course for quite some time sticking mainly to my comfy little home course with very little traffic which also means flat, where you can ride on the big ring on the 15 all the way if you want. When Steve put forward the idea for this morning, I seriously thought that I might not get all the way up that last big hill but I did, not with my eyes popping out of my head either. So all in all I was very happy indeed with the morning work out.

Back into Arundel we loaded the bikes and kit again into Petra and then Steve wanted to go to Starbucks in Broadwater, Worthing to buy some of his favourite coffee for home use. This trip was called for because he had got there solely for that purpose the other day but had just had the coffee and forgotten to buy the packets for home use!!!???

So like a cat returning to the spot where it caught a mouse last Thursday, he had to go back to that outlet. Other Starbucks nearby do not hold that particular blend.  Actually it is one of the best coffee spots in miles because the building was formerly a bank and one of the rooms inside, at the back of the shop is the old vault which is kinda fun.

Another Day in Paradise; OK Then, Arundel

We are hoping to get out early on Sunday morning to get a longer, harder bike ride done and so, just for a change we went out for our regular hilly Sunday 10km this morning.
Then, since we were changing most things, we changed everything and instead of the Angmering park run that is the standard, we opted instead to do the one we have been doing in the week, that is one lap of the Arundel Triathlon run route and to keep the changes ringing out by doing both 5km laps of that course.
Steve has been keeping a record of the times for those Arundel 5k’s laps.

To complicate matters further, we don’t start the run in the car park, as it does in the actual event (July16th), but we start at the metal bar in the pavement outside the post office door. We walk around the block once after getting out of the car; the car is placed wherever the Parking Angel told Steve that she has saved him a prime parking spot.

The first lap this morning:
34.58
Second lap
34.28
Total
1.09.26

The second lap was our 4th best time for this year and the first lap was 6th.
We met Tuff Fittys Clive Harvey running in the opposite direction at the end of Swanbourne Lake. A brief chat to pass information told us that he is tapering for Geneva Marathon. We also met the same lady, who was walking her dog on the identical course to us but clockwise instead of our anti clockwise direction. Lucky dog being taking for a lovely 5 km run like that instead of just around the block.

Once we got to our finish line, we carried on for a little while because I don’t like to stop sharp; I prefer and gentle run down and walk and it was then that we noticed a van that is driven by a friend of ours that we had not seen in a while, so we conducted a search of the café’s to find where he was hiding out, only to find that a whole bunch of Tuff Fitty’s were tucking into the traditional full English breakfast in The Edible Sandwich Café by the River. There beaming up at us, was the friend we were looking fo, caught with a forkful of eggy bakey on its journey to his mouth. Puddy, (who is not a puddy at all) was sitting next to his lovely wife Jane and the rest of the Fitty mob including Jon and of course Clive who we had passed earlier in the park.

We did not join them because Steve, who is a coffee snob like me, does not like the coffee they serve there, although the breakfast looked wonderful. We only allow ourselves such a treat once a month or even less, yes probably less. In truth we are more liable to make a Saturday breakfast a french toast and berries special in Osteria or even drive or ride our bikes to Chichester to Carlucios for wild mushrooms and that sort of posh stuff. Champagne taste and beer money rules OK!

Having come home, we had a little paper/computer work to do and then I finished the sweet little story poem added below this; that is about my friend Helen over the road’s little granddaughter Amelia and it is completely true.

To complete the pleasure of the morning, Christine from next door brought me a bunch of Lily of the Valley from her garden. I am going to really miss Christine and Jan, when they move to France in a few weeks time. We always dread nice neighbours leaving and wonder what the new ones will be like but it was the same with the house the other side and as it turns our they are a lovely little family too; Conan and Hannah with their darling little boy Héctor. Three more lots new neighbours to come this summer.

Amelia Drives Her Car

Amelia’s a little girl of three
Who drives a motor car
She drives along the road with glee
You’d be surprised how far

Amelia the blue eyed blondie
Drives round the corner to a park
And looks around asking fondly
Who’d like a go now for a lark

Amelia calls to all her friends
It must be your turn now
Girls and boys her car she lends
She gently shows then how

To see them laugh makes her smile
They each take turns in her pink car
Happy the children play a while
With sweet Amelia and her car

Littlehampton: Brainless new bus route

During the last week, I note that the builders of the massive housing estate north of the railway line have now been handed a get out of jail free ticket.
As of April 24th a new No. 15 hourly bus service has been introduced.

Starting from Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre, which circuitously travels an unbelievable route through the town to the new North Littlehampton Estate.
After passing the community tip, there is a turning point at Benjamin Gray Drive, Courtwick.

The worst part of the planning of this route is that once it turns off the A 259 Worthing Road into the other new-ish estate thereabouts.
On turning in to Olliver Acre, the bus then turns left into Holmes Way which is a tiny connecting road from the estate through to Toddington Lane.
When this new estate was built, the Toddington Lane junction on to that main road was closed forcing traffic through the new estate.

Holmes Way, is not wide enough for two cars to pass on the corners!
That alone is reason enough not to go that way.
The pavements are as wide as the road.
Now a Compass bus is using that little road, where path’s are full of children at school start and end times.

After the second turn into Toddington Lane, it then proceeds past Holly Drive into a blind zig-zag bend, which is actually right in front of our house.
Then there is a junction with Steele Crescent at the north end of that estate to the side of us.
Then over the railway crossing it goes and through the jungle of works vehicles and on a road lined with parked cars from the new housing there.
The route then continues to a turning point round Benjamin Drive, Courtwick.

Only a complete idiot could have planned this route and there will be carnage since accidents are just a matter of time.
If cars have difficulty passing in this narrow road how can a bus have been routed down there?
This service, so I believe is subsidised by the building contractors and Littlehampton Council.
Obviously people who have bought new homes need to get to work and take the kids to school.
However, there was a new road promised and there is no sign of it even starting yet.
I think the Council should halt the building work until the promises that got the planning permission are met.
It is now vital they should be start work to build road into the town from the new North Littlehampton Estate and out of it to the north.

I am sure all the issues that I have presented here are close to the hearts of Littlehampton people.
With the new tip opening hours drastically reduced causing miles of queues of waiting cars, how much must we take of this.
Please write to the Littlehampton Gazette and the council about this state of affairs.

Comfortably back in the saddle of my high horse.

Littlehampton on going local issues of concern

This morning I found a response in my email box from West Sussex would be Councillor Gary Markwell, who is on the campaign trail for the elections on May 4th
I have to say that I am surprised that he read my letter so thoroughly and responded to everything I mentioned for which I am pleased.
I have now responded.

Dear Mrs Belt,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to contact me.

I was very concerned to receive your email and see the photos of the fly tipping attached. Has this all taken place since the reduction in hours? Also has this been reported to the County Council? As I am currently only a candidate, I am not in a position to take any direct action on this, but should I be successfully elected next Thursday, I would be happy to take up your concerns directly with the County Council on your behalf.

I understand your concerns regarding the effect of new housing development on our local roads. One of my top priorities should I be successfully elected on 4th May is to campaign against over-development locally. We have seen 100s of new houses being built to the South of Arundel over the last few years, with no improvement to the A259, A27 or Lyminster Road. This also affects local services such as school places and doctor availability. I believe we must have the infrastructure in place to serve any future development before it is built.

Finally, I agree with your concerns about the local traffic situation, and I believe one of the biggest issues we face in Arundel & Courtwick is the upgrade of the A27 Arundel Bypass. I share your view that the current traffic situation is unacceptable and an improvement is urgently required. I look forward to seeing the public consultation in the summer to see which route options are included.

With just over one week left until election day, I do hope I can count on your vote next Thursday!

Kind Regards

Gary Markwell

Below is my original letter repeated as a reminder only

Subject: Raising an issue of concern

Good day to you Mr. Markwell,

On the glossy leaflet that came through our door, I found this email address, under the heading 'If you would like to raise an issue of concern…..'
My husband and I have three issues of concern.

1.
I would like to know what if anything, is going to be done about the absolute chaos at the tip in Mill Lane, just around the corner from our home in Toddington Lane, Littlehampton.
We are both outraged at the new opening hours.
The tip should be open from 8am at the latest when it is now not open until 10am.
Two days of closure have been introduced.
These are Tuesday and Wednesday.
This represents an appalling reduction in the service and is that main contributing factor in the massive increase in fly tipping in the area.
This difficulty in getting to the tip is making filthy unhealthy piles of household mess all over our wonderful countryside hereabouts.
The queues to get into the tip are now horrendous and if you do not know about this yourself, I suggest you make an unannounced visit  to see with you own eyes the disruption that is caused.
Yesterday morning by 9.45am, there was already a queue reaching back to the main road and in the other direction cars were also parked waiting for the opening all the way back to the building sites.
At that time, I returned home with my three bags of green garden cuttings.
I returned at 1pm when it was not quite so bad but the trip, that used to take me 12-15 minutes for the return drive took me nearly an hour.

2.
The mass of building work going on in Toddington Lane/Mill Lane, north of the rail line which is also close to our home.
The road should have been constructed first, before the whole 'New Town' that is being thrown up at a scary rate of knots, was allowed to continue.
The mess that is left on the narrow road has during the wet weather in the winter been a quagmire and is a dust bowl on dry days.
There are now cars parked everywhere and passing what is now a serious bottleneck is already difficult before hundreds of new families move in.

3.
I do not like to complain about Littlehampton because I have lived in the area for fifty six of seven years and have been happy here.
When we moved into Toddington Lane about twenty five years ago it was a quiet country lane. now it is a mess.
My husband and myself are triathletes, but now I do not like to ride on the main roads any more because of the dreadful traffic situation.
Riding our bikes from our home up toward Arundel is far too dangerous now, almost out of the question.
My husband has a business concern on the A 27 at Poling on The Vinery Estate and some evenings it has been taking him 30-50 minutes to get home on what was a ten minute trip.
The heavy hold ups at Cross Bush/ McDonnalds area traffic lights is a nightmare due to the A27 Arundel bypass hold up in construction which seems a criminal affront to local people.

Yours in sport and hope

Stop me any way you can if ever I say that I am standing for election.
The following poem contains the scary manifesto I have in mind.

When I Am Prime Minister

The day when Prime Minister I become
Leadership fairer and much more sage
Will make new laws and change will come
For the young and those in older age.

Plain bad manners and rude words
Will be absolutely and completely banned
Guilty ones sent out to live in wild herds
Guarded only by the Almighty’s hand.

When much too much, are ones is earnings
Weekly charity work will be enforced
There will be monthly town centre burnings
Of rapists and paedophiles endorsed.

For spending years in invalid caring
This investment will be compensated
Replaced will be the rags they’re wearing
Nurses, for just rewards rightly nominated.

Lesser crimes still will not pass free
Pavement blocking shoppers admonished
They must endless footage of themselves see
Staring into space as if astonished.

Cold caller menaces who a phone call place
The very plague of these modern days
Will be dispatched by rocket ship into space
Hurtling on into the suns burning rays.

Vote for me should you like these words
Rather than a much more sinister minister
Laws as loud and clear as Beethoven’s chords
Oh yes we can, when I am Prime Minister.
