Brighton and Hove Tri-Scooter-Thon

It was registration today for the new big race on the South Coast this weekend taking place on Hove Lawns, which is to be found on the western end of Brighton’s lovely promenade.
As well as the registration and bike racking, there was a most impressive Health and Fitness show in full flow with loads of free classes to try out, Zumba, Kick Boxing, Trampolining, Kettle and Yoga classes and then tent upon tent of healthy food vendors and sports kit merchants, including an old friend, Sam from the Jog Shop in Brighton, whom I have not seen for quite a while and who was most helpful to me when I first came into multi sport.

It was nice to be greeted by Nicola Lunt and re introduced to her two sons who were also working on preparation day. Registration was very speedy with Race Supremo himself, John Lunt outside the administration tent with his son Tommy racking bikes and minding the rack whilst athletes went inside to register.

The Kingsway will be closed to traffic tomorrow, so Steve and I did a bit of an investigation as to where was best to park. This morning we parked the other side of the King Alfred leisure centre but that was too far away for convenience tomorrow. Fingers crossed the way in and where we planned to park, will work in the morning. My race start is nearly an hour before Steve’s. There will be races going on all morning with a choice for everybody no matter what level, distance or group they wish to be herded into.

As we were leaving we took a while to watch the quite delightful Scooter-thon for smaller children to sample the thrill of racing. It involved a looped course for a Run- Scooter- Run race. The start was surprisingly formal for such tiny kiddies all wearing helmets for the duration of the event. There was one of the young Lunt family boys to lead the way out for all of the little people to follow. Mums and Dad’s cheering and shouting encouragement from the side lines.

One of the bespoke events senior Marshal’s actually taking the hand of one tiny dot who was looking more than a little confused but began to enjoy herself a lot more with the caring Siobhan Elliot showing her what fun it was…… Well, Siobhan was having a great time!

Before leaving we had a chat with John Lunt who was behind the staging of the 2012 Olympic Triathlon but acted as Starter for the teeny-tinies, complete with megaphone and oversaw this wonderful little introduction to multi sport of quite young children. Obviously Mr. Lunt is still looking to the future of our sport. I only saw one little boy looking less than cheerful seeing a load of small girls doing much better than he was, but even he got a smile back on his face after his mummy ran a little way holding his hand to show him where he was aiming for to reach the finish.

Well done Brighton and Hove Triathlon for putting this little taster event on for the youngsters.
