Suddenly it’s Summer

Summer was backward in coming forward here now but rather late

The winter hanging on to the last knockings is now is past

White legged people hunt for shorts and sandals unprepared for sun

Carelessly ignoring all sensible advice now cold winds at last abate

Paying the price with hot red sore skin after sunbathing is overdone

Like nails scratching a blackboard bad weather unwillingly gone at last

In England we are resigned from experience and know our fate

Greedily grasping every possible given moment in the great outdoors

Familiar smells of Bar-B-Q flaring to life cover torn off as families asked

Garden furniture dragged out of the shed with spider’s silky webs spun

Tourists pour in by car and train and bus to the suddenly crowded shores

Desirous of the deepest tan of any family member not to be outdone

Locals watch them invade the beach that to their city homes so contrast

Promenading in the sudden heat buy the children inflatable dinosaurs

Sand between their toes blisters from unaccustomed sandals wearing

As leaving for the journey home is mentioned youngsters cry aghast

Bribed by parents who giving in coax with a tasty burger in a bun

Start the long drive home as sticky fingers a bag of salty fries are sharing

Will any of them see the sunset behind then that all the locals stun

Radio stations changing with distance from the broadcasting mast

No comfort for the teens now is to have raunchy pop tunes blaring
