St. Stephen’s 70th Birthday

Clearwater, Florida

Tomorrow is a big day for Stephen, it doesn’t sound possible, but it will be his seventieth birthday. When the year started this weekend would have been our sixth important event but as we have now accepted they have all been postponed until 2021.

Steve’s birthday event was expected to be the European Championships in Tartu, Estonia. We both qualified for that last September in the Brighton and Hove Triathlon. We did want to go there, since it satisfied our wander lust as a place that we have never been to. It has been moved to the end of August this year, which is a surprise to us both since everything else was delayed by a year. Sometime things just don’t work out.

Tomorrow would also have been the National Aquathlon Championships in Worthing and that would have been nice to do also since I did win my age group in last years Nat. Aq. Ch. A sea swim challenge for that would also have been interesting and enjoyable and only eight miles from home into the bargain.

So Steve is planning a home stitched event that he has not fully disclosed details of to me yet, he is holding his card close to his chest. The weather forecast is not bad so it may include a sea swim. The tide is high very early which suits us. So I am guessing to myself that it may be a triathlon with long transitions but not too long since there is celebrating to do later.

Tomorrow afternoon, my daughter has been handed the post of manager for a picnic birthday meal in their garden that is much larger than ours, and has a smart table and chairs arrangement at the edge of the lawn. We both agreed that a seventieth birthday could not be ignored even if a party as such, was not ever considered in the light of the, not anything like fully over under the Covid cloud that is so slow lifting away.

Mr Nice Guy

Steve and I nearly always have an event or a journey set up for big birthdays, so we have had to adjust to the circumstances this year. In fact I don’t see a time yet when we will go anywhere to stay for a while. We had a number of theatres booking arranged for this summer time but again they have all be postponed or cancelled. I think I booked for four evenings during summer at the Chichester Festival Theatre alone and I have heard from them that some bookings with be moved to 2021 and just one day out for the ones that will be possible then but some have had to be cancelled altogether and we have to let them know which of their suggested options we wish to proceed with: A. Take the date the play is moved to B. Apply for a refund or  C. Donate the funds from the tickets to the theatre to help during this difficult time with no business but plenty of costs; Mmmmm, wish we were wealthy enough to do that but we are in the same boat ourselves, with no business going on, no income,  but the rent still being paid at the warehouse. We had tickets for South Pacific, close to Steve’s birthday this week so that is on hold for next year.

Just to explain the page heading today. I don’t know what I would do without Stephen. I do call him Saint Stephen so often, and that’s because he really is the nearest thing I know to a Saint. He is so concerned with making sure that I am cared for and protected and I am not just talking about the last four months. He is the kindest person and a wonderful husband.
