Four Hours of Pain and Pleasure

Horse Polo on the frozen lake in St Moritz February 2020 two mascots attacking me

When I mention that we spend almost every moment of our Sunday mornings working hard on our turbo trainers, I tend to get the occasional raised eyebrow from people who consider that laying in bed all morning is a good idea, which is something that I raise my eyebrows at the thought of.

This morning was pretty standard then in some ways. We did sit on the saddles of our turbo training bikes from 7.45am until just before noon this morning. Actually, the time flew by because we were glued to Eurosport, watching the women’s 30km and then the Men’s 50km cross country skiing distance events. That would have kept us happy in its own right, but there was a second reason that we were so engrossed. The venue for these two incredible events was the Engadine Valley in Switzerland where as the saying goes…. We have spent more winter holidays in that exact region, than some poor folks have had hot dinners.

Having missed our annual visit at the start of this year, this full morning with Eurosport’s coverage, raised our spirits a little, reminding us of the many extremely happy days that we have spent there, in our many years together.

Heidi Weng from Norway 1.28.11 won the women’s 30 km race that was the first shown today.

Simen Hegstad Krueger, also of Norway won the men’s 50km in 2 hours 10 minutes and 41 seconds.

There were six Norwegians in the top ten of the men’s event astonishingly!

We had such a great time, shouting out every time we spotted somewhere that we have stayed or visited, in the forty odd years or more that it has been our favourite resort.

We have stayed in almost every hotel in the Upper Engadine apart from the very expensive establishments, though we have had tea in even those huge luxury hang-outs of the rich and famous.

As well as the many hotels that we have stayed in, there have been loads of apartments, not to mention the dozens of restaurants and churches and points of interest that are all so familiar to us. We both skied for many years but I ducked out at my last injuries and Steve is a fine weather skier only for a couple of hours. We are both huge Bob sleigh fans, so we plan carefully to include as much as we can of our favourite things. There are such a lot of sports events held there like the Cartier Polo on the frozen lake. There is a food festival that we have also been to an event in the kitchen of one of the big hotels.

Both of these events today covered every village, lake and forest along the point-to-point courses and we have walked most of the kilometres covered today though not all in one hit.

The scenery is unbelievably beautiful. We love the place to bits and hopefully the world will return to normal one day, fingers and eyes crossed.

The only downside of today was that we both looked less than our best when my daughter Jacqueline and her husband Martin arrived outside for a chat and to bring Mothers Day flowers and gifts but just as we had arrived at bath time! No makeup and hair stuck to my scalp with four hours of sweat. Not my best look! It was still a joy to see them after so long not being able to visit or have dinner together. In contrast to our messy appearances, they were looking smart, warm and well. Even a bit of a chat over the garden wall is a hell of a lot better than nothing. Where has the light at the end of the tunnel got to?
